Borotron® Family

A family of polyethylene shapes enhanced with varying degrees of elemental boron for use as a medical and industrial shielding material to attenuate and absorb neutron radiation.

Products in the Borotron® Family

Borotron® HM030 PE
Borotron® HM030 high molecular weight polyethylene shapes are enhanced with 3% elemental boron, which makes this grade suitable for shielding in nuclear and medical applications. The high hydrogen content of HMW-PE allows the material to absorb thermal neutrons, which are then absorbed by the added boron compound. For these reasons, Borotron® HM030 HMW-PE components are often favored for use in nuclear waste disposal and detection system, nuclear material storage and transportation, radiation therapy environments, and hot cell technology applications.
    Material properties
  • Enhanced with 3% elemental boron
  • Very good wear and abrasion resistance
  • High impact strength
  • Excellent chemical resistance
  • Low coefficient of friction
  • Very low water absorption
  • Excellent machinability
Borotron® HM050 HMW-PE
Borotron® HM050 high molecular weight polyethylene shapes are enhanced with 5% elemental boron, making this thermoplastic grade a superior solution for nuclear and medical applications requiring extreme shielding. The high hydrogen content of HMW-PE allows this grade to absorb thermal neutrons, which are then absorbed by the added boron compound. Borotron® HM050 HMW-PE components are often favored for use in nuclear waste disposal and detection systems, nuclear material storage and transportation, radiation therapy environments, and hot cell technology applications within the nuclear and medical technology markets.
    Material properties
  • Enhanced with 5% elemental boron
  • Very good wear and abrasion resistance

Borotron® UH050 PE
Borotron® UH015 ultra high molecular weight polyethylene shapes are enhanced with 1.5% elemental boron, making this grade a superior solution for in extreme shielding in nuclear and medical applications. The high hydrogen content of UHMW-PE allows the material to absorb thermal neutrons, which are then absorbed by the added boron compound. For these reasons, Borotron® UH015 UHMW-PE components are prevalent in the nuclear and medical technology industries.
